The story—such as it is—follows the greedy Princess Buvsky as she races to consume the rainbow energy source of Kabobberland. Your mission is to lead your army of Buvskies and stop her before she reaches the rainbow on the far side of the screen. Standing in your way are the dangerous Kabobbers, determined to wipe out your rescue party.
 
At its core, Kabobber is simple: jump on enemies before they jump on you. But the strategy quickly deepens thanks to your growing army of Buvskies. Your troops surround you in a square formation, moving as you move. When first summoned, they begin as vulnerable babies and must defeat weaker enemies to grow to full strength. Baby Buvskies can only conquer the green Guvskies—any stronger enemy will destroy them—so careful protection is essential.
 
You have a limited supply of reinforcements (shown at the bottom of the screen), though you can earn more by defeating enemies, up to a maximum reserve. As your army grows, so does your power—but also your risk, as a larger formation makes you an easier target.
 
As levels progress, enemies become faster and more numerous, and Princess Buvsky moves ever closer to her goal. Victory requires more than reckless jumping; you’ll need to choose your battles wisely and manage your forces carefully. Take too long, however, and the Princess will claim the rainbow.
 
The game ends when your army is wiped out—or when the Princess reaches her prize.
