Plutos – Atari 7800

Step into one of the most legendary “lost” Atari 7800 prototypes ever created. Plutos spent years hidden away in a private collection and was never officially released—until recently. This vertically scrolling space shooter delivers fast-paced action reminiscent of classics like Raiden, making it a must-have for fans of retro arcade-style gameplay.

Battle your way through six unique levels, each featuring its own theme, enemies, and challenging boss encounters. Whether playing solo or teaming up, Plutos supports simultaneous two-player action (enabled via the left difficulty switch), adding an extra layer of excitement.

A standout feature of Plutos is its dynamic weapon upgrade system, offering depth and replayability:

  • Weapon 1 – Dual Machine Guns
Your default weapon. Each upgrade increases firing speed and overall power.
  • Weapon 2 – Spread Gun
Expands your attack range with wider shot patterns. Upgrades enhance both power and spread style.
  • Weapon 3 – Energy Beam
A focused, high-speed attack. Upgrades boost both speed and destructive force.
  • S Power-Up – Shield Boost
Grants temporary invincibility—perfect for escaping tight situations.

Weapons can be upgraded up to four levels. Collecting an additional power-up after maxing out will cycle the weapon back to level one—so choose your pickups carefully!

Originally developed by Tynesoft, a studio known for Atari 8-bit and ST titles, Plutos was part of an effort to enter the Atari 7800 market alongside its companion game Sirius. Unfortunately, the company exited the industry before either title could be released, leaving both games in obscurity for years.

It remains a mystery why Atari never brought Plutos to market—but today, it stands as a fantastic addition to any Atari 7800 collection, offering polished gameplay, unique mechanics, and a fascinating piece of gaming history.
