Sirius – Atari 7800
Discover another legendary “lost” Atari 7800 prototype that never saw an official release. Sirius was once held in a private collection for years, making it one of the most sought-after unreleased titles for the system—until recently.
This horizontally scrolling space shooter delivers intense, arcade-style action inspired by classics like Gradius and R-Type. Take on four distinct levels, each packed with unique enemies, visual themes, and challenging boss battles. Unlike its sister title Plutos, Sirius is a single-player experience focused on precision, strategy, and survival.
The game features a difficulty setting controlled by the left difficulty switch—but be warned, Sirius is already a tough challenge, and higher settings push your skills to the limit.
Power-ups are essential to your success, offering two key upgrade types:
- Remote Ship Upgrade
Similar to the “Option” from Gradius, this small companion ship follows your movements and provides additional firepower, helping you take down enemies more efficiently.
- Weapon Upgrades
Increase your offensive capabilities—something you’ll quickly realize is critical to survival. Two weapon types are available:- Rapid Fire – Boosts firing speed for constant pressure on enemies
- Spread Fire – Expands your attack range to cover more of the screen
You’ll also find collectible diamonds scattered throughout each level, adding bonus points and encouraging exploration during the chaos.
Developed by Tynesoft, a studio known for Atari 8-bit and ST titles, Sirius was part of an attempt to break into the Atari 7800 market alongside Plutos. Unfortunately, the company exited the industry before either game could be released, leaving both titles hidden away for years.
Why Atari never picked up Sirius remains a mystery—but today, it stands as a challenging and rewarding addition to any Atari 7800 collection, offering fast-paced gameplay and a fascinating piece of gaming history.
