Lightly used game.  Tested on an Atari CX2600, 2600+ and 7800+.

One of the final releases from the small publisher Commavid, Cakewalk has earned a reputation as one of the rarest and most difficult-to-find games for the Atari 2600. It saw only limited distribution, reportedly appearing in a small number of stores, mostly in the Midwest, and it remained on the market for only a short time before Commavid exited the video game business. As a result, many collectors may spend a lifetime searching without ever owning an original copy. That is especially unfortunate because, unlike many ultra-rare titles, Cakewalk is actually a surprisingly enjoyable game.

At first glance, Cakewalk may seem a little familiar. Its basic setup and fast-paced style bring to mind another well-known game, *Tapper*. The two games are certainly different, but they share enough similarities to feel like distant cousins. In Cakewalk, you play as a baker trying to catch cakes as they roll off the ends of six conveyor belts. The cakes appear at varying speeds and intervals, making it difficult to predict where the next one will drop. To help manage the chaos, the baker can temporarily stop one conveyor belt at a time by pressing the fire button. The belt remains frozen for four seconds, preventing any cakes on it from advancing until it starts moving again. Let too many cakes fall, however, and the game is over.

One of the stranger features in Cakewalk is the coffee break. After catching a certain number of cakes, the baker gets a brief rest from the action — apparently even video game bakers have union rules. You will know the coffee break has arrived when a large coffee cup appears on one of the conveyor belts. Although it may sound like a bonus round, it really functions more like a built-in pause. The game waits until you collect the coffee, after which the action resumes.

The game also includes gingerbread men, which add some welcome variety. Unlike the cakes, which move in more predictable patterns, the gingerbread men dance erratically along the conveyor belts until caught. This gives the gameplay a more frantic and unpredictable feel, and some game variations feature nothing but gingerbread men. In many ways, those variations are among the most entertaining and arguably should have been the main attraction from the start. Also watch out for the knife and fork. For reasons known only to the game’s designers, touching them will kill your baker.
