With a name like *Elk Attack*, you might expect stampeding herds of rampaging elk. Not quite—there aren’t any elk here at all. The title is actually a tongue-in-cheek joke from programmer Mark Hahn, who likely would have renamed it if the game had seen an official release. In reality, *Elk Attack* is a port of the obscure Electric Yo-Yo.
 
Despite the misleading name, the gameplay feels closer to *Pac-Man*—minus the maze. You control a yo-yo–like device that uses its string to latch onto and destroy colored blocks scattered across the screen. As you clear the board, you’ll encounter odd, worm-like enemies (still no elk), determined to interfere with your progress.
 
Power squares offer a temporary advantage, boosting your speed and granting invincibility. However, unlike *Pac-Man*, touching enemies while powered up won’t destroy them—you’ll just earn points. Because of this, it’s usually smarter to stay focused on clearing blocks rather than chasing enemies.
 
Movement is entirely dependent on your yo-yo string, which adds a layer of strategy. Once you latch onto a block, you’re committed—you won’t release until you reach it. As the board opens up, this becomes increasingly risky. A common mistake is hooking onto a distant block and being pulled straight into an enemy. To stay alive, it’s best to clear the screen methodically, avoiding large gaps that can leave you exposed.
