Caterpillar S.O.S. (Scheduled Oil Sampling) is an extremely rare and unusual 1983 promotional title developed by Nuvatec exclusively for the ColecoVision console. Unlike traditional retail releases, this game was never sold to the public. Instead, Caterpillar distributed copies directly to CAT heavy equipment dealerships across the country, where customers could play the game in dealership waiting areas while learning about Caterpillar’s real-world S.O.S. oil analysis program.
 
In the game, players take control of a Caterpillar bulldozer and travel across the worksite completing “jobs” by pushing piles of dirt for profit. But success requires more than just moving earth — players must also carefully maintain the health of their machine. To avoid catastrophic engine failure, regular oil samples must be sent to the CAT dealership for testing. Ignore maintenance for too long and contaminated oil can cause the bulldozer to explode! Players can restore their machine by returning to the dealership for service before heading back out to complete more jobs and earn bigger profits.
 
Blending arcade-style gameplay with an educational promotional purpose, Caterpillar S.O.S. stands today as one of the most obscure and collectible pieces of ColecoVision history — a fascinating crossover between the video game industry and the world of heavy equipment.
