Necromancer places you in the role of Illuminar, a powerful wizard locked in battle against the evil Tetragorn the Necromancer and his army of supernatural creatures.
 
Unlike a traditional arcade game, Necromancer unfolds across three completely different stages, with your success in each determining the challenges you will face in the next.
 
In The Forest, Illuminar must create an army of magical trees. Control your mystical Wisp to plant seeds and nurture them into fully grown trees while defending them from marauding ogres and poisonous spiders. Destroy the attacking creatures, cure poisoned trees and collect additional seeds as the action becomes faster and more frantic.
 
The trees that survive become your allies in The Vaults, a multi-level underground crypt filled with deadly spider eggs. Command your trees to break into the chambers and crush the eggs before they hatch. Explore the vaults, battle attacking spiders, collect mysterious prizes and find your way ever deeper into Tetragorn's domain.
 
Finally, enter The Graveyard for the ultimate confrontation. Destroy the gravestones before Tetragorn can emerge, battle the spiders that escaped destruction in the Vaults and use your magical Wisp to fight the Necromancer himself. Survive his fiery attacks and destroy the forces of darkness before Illuminar's power is exhausted!
 
What makes Necromancer especially unusual is the way all three stages are connected. Grow more trees in the Forest and you'll have more weapons available in the Vaults. Fail to destroy spider eggs underground and those same spiders return to make the final Graveyard battle even more difficult. Your actions have consequences throughout the adventure.
 
With its imaginative fantasy setting, unusual gameplay and rapidly increasing challenge, Necromancer became one of the most memorable titles in the Atari 8-bit computer library.
