Rainbow Walker – Atari 5200

Take a walk on the rainbow in one of the Atari 8-bit computer's most colorful and imaginative arcade games—now converted for the Atari 5200 SuperSystem!

Rainbow Walker combines fast-paced arcade action with colorful graphics, unusual enemies and a unique pseudo-3D playfield unlike almost anything else from the era.

You control Cedrick, a strange little creature with a very important job—the rainbow has lost its color, and it's up to you to bring it back!

Cedrick hops across a huge curved rainbow suspended high above the clouds. At the beginning of each level, the rainbow's squares are gray. Every square Cedrick touches bursts into color, and your objective is to travel across the entire rainbow until every remaining square has been restored. Complete the rainbow and it's on to the next increasingly difficult challenge!

It sounds simple—but Cedrick isn't alone.

Strange creatures roam the rainbow attempting to spoil your work. Some enemies turn colored squares back to gray, while others can knock Cedrick from the rainbow completely. A shooting star races along the rainbow and can carry Cedrick to a dangerous location, while the dreaded demon bird can sweep him into the clouds and undo the coloring you've worked so hard to complete.

You'll also encounter missing sections and fragile squares that make each rainbow increasingly difficult to navigate. Stand on a fragile square too long and it will break away beneath you—but these dangerous tiles can also work to your advantage by temporarily freezing the creatures roaming the rainbow, giving Cedrick an opportunity to eliminate them.

Careful movement is essential. Cedrick can hop from square to square or leap over a space when necessary, allowing skilled players to cross dangerous gaps and avoid approaching enemies. One careless move, however, can send him tumbling from the rainbow into the clouds below.

With 20 increasingly challenging levels, the rainbow continues to change as you progress, introducing new gaps and hazards that require faster reactions and careful planning. Special bonus rounds appear between levels, challenging you to remain on a moving chain of squares for as long as possible to earn additional points.

Rainbow Walker became particularly memorable for its distinctive curved playfield, smooth scrolling and colorful presentation. The unusual perspective gives the impression of traveling around a rainbow stretching into the distance, creating an impressive pseudo-3D effect on Atari's 8-bit hardware. The game has remained highly regarded among Atari enthusiasts and was later included by Retro Gamer among its top Atari 8-bit computer games.
